Last Thursday was a big day for clean energy! The New York Power Authority took the first step to develop our state’s very own offshore wind project. Not only that, but a bipartisan group of 42 state legislators called on Governor Cuomo to put New Yorkers back to work building a clean energy economy.
With such huge momentum, Gov. Cuomo finally has the chance to protect our health and clean up our air and water by investing in clean, renewable energy.
By investing in clean energy locally, we can retire the dirty coal-fired power plants in western New York and nuclear plants like Indian Point. We can stop exporting jobs to buy power from other states or Canada.
With clean energy, we can save thousands of lives and reduce cases of asthma and respiratory distress. By investing in offshore wind and solar, we can avoid the costly and potentially hazardous extraction of natural gas, which threatens our water supply.
New York’s lawmakers are realizing that the winds of change are blowing, and that the time for a new kind of power is now. Never before has wind and solar power been as affordable, as reliable, and as feasible as it is today — and it is only going to get cheaper.
An investment in wind and solar power is an investment in the future of American power. It is time let our leaders know New York ratepayers want their utilities to buy power from clean energy sources.
